The Mechanical Soul: Steampunk Style in Contemporary Art

12/7/2013 -  1/25/2014
Bath House Cultural Center

The Bath House Cultural Center presents The Mechanical Soul: Steampunk Style in Contemporary Art, an exhibition that explores some of the elements and styles that are aligned with the aesthetics, design, and characteristics that are commonly associated with steampunk art.

ABOUT STEAMPUNK ART Steampunk art combines ideas and technology from modernity and the future with those from the past. Steampunk begun as a genre of science fiction that frequently described steam-powered machinery and fictional devices set in Victorian and/or American Old West time, when steam was the major source of machine power. The genre later evolved to include all kinds of art, as artists became attracted to the alluring elements and styles of this appealing form of artistic expression. Today, many visual artists, including those who are featured in this exhibition, alter or create objects that are inspired by the steampunk aesthetic. Some of those artifacts have a functional purpose, while others become works of art that can either be displayed or worn as a costume. Common steampunk materials are parts of science and industrial equipment, watches, gears, springs, leather, metal, engraved material, and other miscellaneous machinery. Urban Dictionary aptly describes steampunk as "a subgenre of speculative fiction, usually set in an anachronistic Victorian or quasi-Victorian alternate history setting." It also describes the style with the slogan: "What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner.''
