Steamboats and Paddlewheelers in New Orleans!

Summer time and the livin' is easy on a Steamboat or Paddlewheeler in New Orleans!

Summer is a great time to get away. Airship Crimson Steamers has a fabulously steamy plan!  See our three competing companies for a unique vacation idea!  These are a day's drive away & tickets start at $22 per ticket for adults.

AMERICAN QUEEN
http://www.americanqueensteamboatcompany.com/Destination/lower-mississippi/

Memory flows deep and sentiment eddies and swirls along the Lower Mississippi River on these river cruises. Once divided by these very waters, when cotton was king and the plantation lifestyle was at its zenith, the North and South were at war, each armed with conflicting visions of what was worth dying for. Look back as each battlefield and grave marker has a story to tell. Then celebrate the living, breathing places where southern culture continues to enjoy a modern-day renaissance.

STEAMBOAT NATCHEZ
http://www.steamboatnatchez.com/

The New Orleans Steamboat Company locally owns and operates the last authentic Steamboat on the Mighty Mississippi River:
  • The Steamboat NATCHEZ Dinner Jazz and Daytime jazz cruises … run daily, year round, in the style of authentic steamboats in New Orleans for centuries!
  • Steam Engine Room visitation, calliope, live jazz and optional Creole food and local beverages.

CREOLE QUEEN PADDLEWHEELER
http://www.creolequeen.com/

Join us aboard the authentic & award winning paddlewheeler Creole Queen for the best seat in the house.  Tickets start at $22/person for adults.  Kids under 5 are free!  Some cruises offer food and drinks.

Oklahoma City Railway Museum  http://www.oklahomarailwaymuseum.org/

Come spend an afternoon at the Oklahoma Railway Museum. There’s something for everyone! Come see freight cars, passenger cars, and even a real steam engine on display.   Our museum is open every Thursday, Friday, & Saturday 9:00 to 5:00. Admission to the museum is free. Trains operate first and third Saturdays – April to August.

Heartland Flyer can take you antiquing in Purcell & back home again!

Great antiques and collectables are found in Purcell, OK!  Ride with a friend or read a book while you travel.  The train picks up in Norman about 8:45am and returns from Purcell about 8:45pm, so make a day of it! "When you feel the need for a pleasant pause from life’s frantic pace, escape to Purcell located in the middle of Oklahoma. Drop in and spend a laid-back day exploring Purcell’s Main Street antique stores, full of elegant and eclectic collectibles – pretty things you remember from childhood or visits to your grandparents.

Start at Butler’s Antiques, tucked inside the historic Hotel Love building.  This beautiful building with a large covered porch is the former home of a hotel built in 1895, which has now been meticulously restored. Be sure to peruse the treasures at Auntie Mae’s Antiques and Grapevine Antiques as well. When you’re ready for a break from shopping, take a hearty appetite to the Krystle Spur Steakhouse, where you'll find mouthwatering steaks served alongside hearty sides. Save room for a decadent homemade dessert at this unique steakhouse."

AnamolyCon in Denver ~ March 27th to 29th

Photos and contribution by Richard Spears

March 27 - 29 is AnomalyCon! It is the coolest Steampunk con in Colorado. I go to a lot of different cons, but this is by far my favorite! I am so excited for this year! It looks like it is going to be the biggest one yet. The one thing I love is everyone is so laid back - and they are there to meet other people. It makes you feel like you know everyone and they all want to talk to you. In fact this year I am going with friends I actually met at last years AnomalyCon. I love the way everyone's costumes are just an extension of themselves. I love to meet the hidden personality when they let go for three days. I would love to extend my personal invitation to 2015 AnomalyCon March 27-29 - Denver, Colorado!
For more info, check out https://www.anomalycon.com/

Thanks to the Steampunk Punisher, Richard Spears, for writing for us!  Although Rich is from CO, his family is from Tulsa & he's a HUGE OU fan, so he's an honorary member of the Airship Crimson Steamers.

Dieselpunk New Year!

Happy New Year!

The holidays continue! Downton Abbey's Season 5 will warm 2015!

Lady Mary will shock us with her exploits and Lady Rose will dazzle us with her shenanigans. I dare not write another word.  I've already watched 8 episodes and am 'patiently' waiting for the UK Christmas special to be loaded to YouTube.

January is a great time to visit Norman's NEW thrift shops!

Main Street in Norman, OK is the new home of Outreach Thrift [near Big Lots] and a brand new Goodwill [next to Wattaburger].  They each have sister stores on East 12th Street.  The Outreach Thrift is near the Eastside Walmart & the Goodwill is next to the Harbor Freight.

Great out-of-season items include: swim goggles, water guns, and plastic pumpkins.  All of these can be sanded, painted and 'steampunked' during the shorter, colder days of winter.  Just be sure to have proper ventilation.

Look for Disney's Atlantis & Treasure Planet for a bargain price.  These animated movies are a great way to corrupt younglings towards the steampunk aesthetic.

Steampunk accessories are found year-round now @ Hastings & Party Galaxy!

As steampunk and diesel punk become more 'mainstream' a few albeit plastic yet affordable options do exist on Main Street.  Hastings has goggles and a few other accessories with Harry Potter fandom. {Spellcheck doesn't know the word 'fandom'.  Yay! Maybe we aren't as 'mainstream' as I'd feared.}  Anyway, Party Galaxy keeps their steampunk costume bits year round.  Annoying really, since they are not considered 'Halloween' costumes and put on sale.  *sigh*

Lastly...

If wishes were horses...we'd all be in California for the Steampunk Carnival aboard the Queen Mary!  http://hrmsteam.com/venue

Happy New Year Crimson Steamers!

Halloween Weekend Anime in OKC!     Izumicon!

A little about Izumicon...

Bridging the genres of anime with Japanese cultural exhibits, panels, and presentations, Izumicon has spent the last few years growing into an amazing anime convention. With a large number of our attendees choosing Izumicon as their very first convention, Izumicon offers every attendee a family friendly experience with a variety of fun ways to spend the weekend.
Izumicon is currently held at the Renaissance Hotel and Cox Convention Center in downtown Oklahoma City, OK. Because the convention is held in central Oklahoma, it's easy for fans to join us from not only Oklahoma, but Texas, Arkansas, and Kansas as well. With confirmed attendees joining us from across the country, it is easy to see why Izumicon promises to be a well-attended event on all fronts.
With a career spanning over two and a half decades, DANTE BASCO is a Hollywood actor who has become a cult classic and pioneering figure in Asian American cinema. He was first introduced in Steven Spielberg’s fairytale movie Hook, as “Rufio”, the leader of the Lost Boys. He quickly jumped to leading roles like Newline’s Take the Lead, opposite Antonio Banderas, and The Debut, which became the voice of a Filipino American generation. 20th Century Fox executives were so mesmerized by the uniqueness of Dante’s look and ability that they gave him a development deal for his own series and he starred in a pilot for Touchstone/ABC, The Chang Family Saves the World, written and produced by John Ridley and directed by Paris Barclay. Ever versatile, he’s “Jake Long” in Disney’s animated series American Dragon: Jake Long as well as “Prince Zuko” in Nickelodeon’s phenomenal hit, Avatar: The Last Airbender.
A young man of many talents, Dante is the founder of one of the largest weekly poetry venues in the country, “Da Poetry Lounge” in Los Angeles and he has also shared his spoken word poetry on Russell Simmons’ HBO Def Poetry Jam. He has also begun writing and producing his own features with his production company Kinetic Films, including Hang Loose, a (hilarious buddy) comedy with YouTube sensation KevJumba, winning the 2012 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival Special Jury Prizes for “Best Actor” and “Best Newcomer” respectively.
From breakdancing in the streets of San Francisco to starring in movies on the silver screen, Dante Basco has become one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood and truly an Asian American icon.

Airship Crimson Steamers Prepare for Norman Med Fair!

Best new vendor @ Med Faire is Punk'dWorks!

Punk'dWorks is a husband and wife company traveling to conventions and fairs with hats, jewelry, corsets, and steampunk clothing.  Their web page is a few months out of date, but don't let this slow you down.  They brought lots of beautiful things to Norman last weekend & we were glad to have them.  They weren't sure how "steampunk would go over" here & were excited by the enthusiastic customers.

Awesome cosplay for Pirates of the Caribbean!

Steampunk author Tim Powers is credited with the inspiration for the series

Medieval Fair - Free Admission [Lloyd Noble parking $5]
April 4th, 5th, and 6th
10am to 7pm
Reaves Park
http://www.medievalfair.org/
https://www.facebook.com/MedievalFair

This year's artwork is by Leslie Davis Raymond of Norman. As a child she discovered the joy of art from the summer programs at the Firehouse Art Center and later through the Art Department at OU. She also performs in the cast of Medieval Fair as Princess Elizabeth de Burgh.

Her artwork truly encompasses all that is Medieval Fair. "I have adopted a style that is stylized and flattened reminiscent of medieval art before the development of perspective. I decided on a composition using a framework of asymmetrical and heavily decorated borders similar to those seen in illuminated manuscripts of the period. I have included elements to represent different popular aspects of the Medieval Fair without being specific to the symbolism of any particular groups. The lances and horses in regalia nod to the jousting tournaments. The chess king and pattern in the grass allude to the human chessboard. The falcon is for the Birds of Prey show, while the lute and goblet honor the performers and the fine food and drink. The line of shields is my reference to the SCA and the forge and spinning wheel symbolize the artisans creating living history as well as those selling their handmade goods."

Airship Crimson Steamers can find lots of steampunk artisans at the Fair - check out our blog from last year's event!  Watch for leather corsets and top hats, as well as goggles and costume pieces.

The Mechanical Soul: Steampunk Style in Contemporary Art

12/7/2013 -  1/25/2014
Bath House Cultural Center

The Bath House Cultural Center presents The Mechanical Soul: Steampunk Style in Contemporary Art, an exhibition that explores some of the elements and styles that are aligned with the aesthetics, design, and characteristics that are commonly associated with steampunk art.

ABOUT STEAMPUNK ART Steampunk art combines ideas and technology from modernity and the future with those from the past. Steampunk begun as a genre of science fiction that frequently described steam-powered machinery and fictional devices set in Victorian and/or American Old West time, when steam was the major source of machine power. The genre later evolved to include all kinds of art, as artists became attracted to the alluring elements and styles of this appealing form of artistic expression. Today, many visual artists, including those who are featured in this exhibition, alter or create objects that are inspired by the steampunk aesthetic. Some of those artifacts have a functional purpose, while others become works of art that can either be displayed or worn as a costume. Common steampunk materials are parts of science and industrial equipment, watches, gears, springs, leather, metal, engraved material, and other miscellaneous machinery. Urban Dictionary aptly describes steampunk as "a subgenre of speculative fiction, usually set in an anachronistic Victorian or quasi-Victorian alternate history setting." It also describes the style with the slogan: "What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner.''
